More than 250 people attended the Determining Change: Increasing Choice and Control for Older Adults through Person-Directed Planning and Self-Determination in Long-Term Care conference in Lansing October 13th and 14th at the Causeway Bay Hotel. Both days were filled with 30 informative break-out sessions on disability pride, advocacy and self-determination, lead by experts in the field.
Tom Nerney, Executive Director for The Center for Self-Determination presented on State and Federal Perspective on Long-Term Care with Peggy Brey, Executive Director of The Office of Services to the Aging. One comment heard repeatedly was, “I wish I could attend every session! They’re all so good!” Twenty-four exhibitors set up shop with brochures and fun giveaways and the plenary breakfast and lunch sessions provided panels of speakers with valuable information. Sponsors included Sunrise Home Health, breakfast sponsor Fidelis Secure Care, lunch sponsor Community Housing Network and co-sponsor Nationalwide Furniture. The Office of Services to the Aging and The Center for Self-Determination were instrumental in the planning and execution with the help of the MACMHB. Talks are underway for a repeat next year!
